The goals of mastering the discipline "Basic clinical cytology" are: to study cytological changes in various pathological processes to comprehend the theoretical foundations of medicine, to conduct a more in-depth study of the clinic and the use of the acquired knowledge in the work of a general practitioner. The objectives of studying the discipline are: to study stereotypical general pathological processes, the scope of which determines the morphological manifestations of a particular disease; to perceive the pathomorphism of diseases arising in connection with changing human living conditions and treatment. The discipline "Basic clinical cytology" refers to the variable part of block C1.2 of the discipline at the student’s choice. The discipline "Basic clinical cytology" is interconnected with the following disciplines: histology, embryology, cytology; microbiology, virology, immunology; pathophysiology, morbid anatomy. The main provisions of the "Basic clinical cytology" are necessary for the in-depth study of the following disciplines: neurology, otorhinolaryngology; ophthalmology; forensic medicine; obstetrics; pediatrics; internal diseases, infectious diseases; phthisiology, general surgery, surgical diseases.
The process of studying the discipline is aimed at the formation of the following competences:
  • the ability to abstract thinking, analysis, synthesis (GC-1)
  • the ability to assess morphofunctional, physiological conditions and pathological processes in the human body to solve professional problems (GPC-9)
  • readiness to collect and analyze patients’ complaints, their medical history, examination results, laboratory, instrumental, pathological and anatomical and other studies in order to recognize their condition or establish the presence or absence of a disease (SPC-5)
  • the ability to determine the main pathological conditions in patients, symptoms and syndromes of diseases, nosological forms in accordance with the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th revision (SPC-6)
  • readiness to analyze and publicly present medical information based on evidence-based medicine (SPC-20)

In the course of studying the discipline "Basic clinical cytology", students learn general laws regulating the course of pathological processes in the body of an adult and an adolescent at microscopic and macroscopic levels; basic nosological forms and features of their course. Based on the acquired knowledge, students obtain the abilities to work with magnifying equipment (microscopes, optical and simple magnifiers); to identify signs of general pathological processes, to identify individual nosological units, to use the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems. Students develop the skills in microscopy, operating the medical conceptual apparatus, analyzing biopsy and sectional examination data.

Types of educational work: lectures, practical exercises.
The study of the discipline ends with a pass-fail test.
