Syllabus abstract of subject
“Epidemiology”
Specialty – 31.05.01 General Medicine
The discipline С.1.1.25 "Epidemiology" refers to the base part of block C1 of the discipline. Epidemiology is based on the knowledge gained during the study of microbiology, virology, immunology, and hygiene. Competences acquired in the study of epidemiology prepare students for mastering professional competences. The main provisions of the discipline should be used in the further study of clinical disciplines (infectious diseases, phthisiology, dermatovenereology, etc.). The objectives of mastering the discipline "Epidemiology" are to acquire fundamental knowledge on the epidemiological classification of diseases; epidemiological examination; development mechanisms and manifestations of the epidemic process; preventive and anti-epidemic measures and the organization of anti-epidemic work; epidemiology and prevention of the most common infectious diseases.
The process of studying the discipline is aimed at the formation of the following competences:
- the ability to abstract thinking, analysis, synthesis (GC-1)
- readiness to keep medical records (GPC-6);
- the ability and readiness to implement a set of measures aimed at maintaining and strengthening health and including promotion of a healthy lifestyle, preventing the onset and (or) spread of diseases, their early diagnosis, identifying the causes and conditions of their occurrence and development, as well as aimed at eliminating harmful effects of environmental factors on human health (SPC-1);
- the ability and readiness to conduct anti-epidemic measures, to organize the protection of the population in the foci of especially dangerous infections, at deterioration of the radiation situation, natural disasters and other emergency situations (SPC-3);
- the ability and readiness to use socio-hygienic methods for collecting and medico-statistical analysis of information on health indicators for adults and adolescents (SPC-4);
- readiness to render medical care in emergency situations, including participation in medical evacuation (SPC-13);
- readiness for educational activities to eliminate risk factors and to develop healthy lifestyle skills (SPC-16);
- the ability to organize medical care in emergency situations, including medical evacuation (SPC-19).
During the study of the discipline "Epidemiology", students learn the epidemiological classification of diseases; epidemiological examination; development mechanisms and manifestations of the epidemic process; preventive and anti-epidemic measures and the organization of anti-epidemic work; epidemiology and prevention of the most common infectious diseases. Based on the acquired knowledge, students obtain the abilities to analyze and predict epidemic processes, to master the methods of epidemiological diagnosis and to use the results of diagnostics in practice. Students develop the skills in applying the methods of epidemiological research, conducting primary preventive and anti-epidemic measures in the foci of the most common infectious diseases.
These results of mastering the discipline "Epidemiology" are achieved through the use of the following types of educational technologies in the learning process:
- lectures using multimedia technology;
- solving case studies at practical classes;
- individual consultations of a teacher when solving tasks at practical classes and group consultations before testing in each section of the discipline;
- unsupervised work of students with visual materials;
- students' participation in scientific research (working in a research club, participation in conferences, competitions, etc.).
In order to implement an individual approach to teaching students following their own educational trajectories in the framework of individual curricula, the study of this discipline is based on the following capacities: providing extracurricular work with students, including in the electronic educational environment, using appropriate software, distance learning , Internet resources, individual consultations, etc.
The total labor output of the discipline is 3 credits (108 hours).
The duration of the discipline is one semester.
Final attestation is in the form of a pass-fail test (9th semester).
