Smirnov Yuri Gennadievich was born on March 9, 1962, in the city of Penza. In 1984, Yuri Gennadievich graduated with honors from Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in Applied Mathematics and received the qualification of "Mathematician". Since 1984, Smirnov Y.G. has been a full-time postgraduate student at Lomonosov Moscow State University, and in 1987, he defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. In 1995, he defended his dissertation for the academic degree of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1998, he was awarded the academic title of Professor. Yuri Gennadievich began his career in 1988 as an assistant at the Department of Higher Mathematics at Penza Polytechnic Institute. During his time at the department, Smirnov Y.G. lectured, conducted practical and laboratory classes in several disciplines, including: "Numerical Methods for Solving Boundary Value Problems", "Mathematical Models in Electrodynamics and Acoustics", "Special Seminar on Research and Development", "Number Theory", "Numerical Methods for Solving Integral Equations", and "Supercomputer Modeling".
During his time at the university, Yuri Gennadievich constantly improves his qualifications, and in 1994, he completed a scientific internship at Lomonosov Moscow State University. Yuri Gennadievich actively engages in scientific research, focusing on mathematical methods for solving diffraction problems. Smirnov's research interests include the theory of boundary value problems and the methods of integral (integro-differential, pseudo-differential) equations in the theory of acoustic and electromagnetic wave diffraction, the theoretical justification of numerical methods for solving these problems, and the development and implementation of parallel computational algorithms for solving problems in acoustics and electrodynamics. Smirnov has published over 350 scientific and educational works, including 12 monographs and 11 educational books. He has also published more than 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals, including 200 articles in journals indexed in Scopus or Web of Science. His Hirsch index in Scopus is 20, and in Web of Science it is 17. Yuri Gennadievich has been the scientific supervisor of research projects supported by 36 grants from the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Russian Science Foundation, and others. Under the guidance of Y.G. Smirnov, 20 of his students studied at postgraduate school and defended their PhD theses and 1 student defended his doctoral dissertation. In 2023 and 2024, Smirnov Yu.G. was included in the "World's Top 2% Scientists" according to the rating of Stanford University and Elsevier.
