C1.1.32 Ophthalmology
The total labor output of the module is 3 credits, 108 hours.

The goal of mastering of the discipline (module) "Ophthalmology" is to acquire theoretical knowledge and skills necessary for a doctor to provide ophthalmic care to patients with pathologies of the organ of vision.

The discipline "Ophthalmology" refers to the base part of block C1 of the discipline. Ophthalmology is one of the basic disciplines that lays the basics of studying the surgical pathology of the eye, which is necessary for any clinician regardless of his/her further specialization. The main provisions of the discipline "Ophthalmology" are necessary for training a specialist in therapeutic, orthopedic dentistry, pediatric dentistry and orthodontics. To study this discipline, students ought to have the following knowledge, abilities and skills formed by previous disciplines:

  • Human anatomy.

Knowledge: anatomical, physiological, age-gender and individual features of the structure and development of a healthy and diseased organism
Abilities: to determine the main landmarks on a person; to outline topographic contours of organs and major nerve trunks
Skills: master the medical anatomical conceptual apparatus.

  •  Physiology and pathological physiology
Knowledge: the concept of etiology, pathogenesis, morphogenesis, pathomorphism of a disease, nosology, principles of classification of diseases, basic concepts of general nosology.
Abilities: to interpret the results of the most common methods of functional diagnostics used to identify pathologies of internal organs
Skills: giving a preliminary diagnosis based on the results of biochemical examination of human biological fluids.
 
  • Pharmacology
Knowledge: classification and basic characteristics of medicines, pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics, indications and contraindications for prescribing medicines, side effects
Abilities: to use various dosage forms for treatment of certain pathological conditions, based on the characteristics of their pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics
Skills: using drugs for treatment, rehabilitation and prevention of various diseases and pathological conditions.
 
  •  Therapy
Knowledge: the clinical picture, course features and possible complications of the most common diseases. Diagnostic methods, diagnostic capacities of methods of direct examination of patients undergoing therapeutic, surgical and anti-infectious treatment, modern methods of clinical, laboratory instrumental examination of patients
Abilities: to determine the status of a patient: to collect an anamnesis, to conduct a survey, physical examination, to assess the condition of a patient; to fill out a medical history, to write out a prescription.
Skills: master general clinical examination methods.
 
  •  Neurology
Knowledge: diagnostic methods, diagnostic capacities of methods of direct examination of neurological patients
Abilities: to conduct an initial examination of the nervous system
Skills: interpreting the results of laboratory, instrumental, and other diagnostic methods
 
  •  Infectious diseases
Knowledge: basic principles of treatment of infectious diseases and rehabilitation of patients, indications for hospitalization of an infectious patient.
Abilities: to outline the scope of additional examination methods.
Skills: interpreting the results of laboratory, instrumental, and other diagnostic methods.
 
  •  Phthisiology
Knowledge: features of diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation of patients with tuberculosis
Abilities: to analyze lung radiographs
Skills: interpreting radiological examination methods
 
The process of studying the discipline is aimed at forming the elements of the following competences in accordance with the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education in this specialty:
  • GC-7 - readiness to use the methods of first aid, methods of protection in emergency situations.
  • GPC-9 - the ability to assess morphological, physiological and pathological processes in the human body to solve professional problems.
  • SPC-5 - readiness to collect and analyze patients’ complaints, their medical history, examination results, laboratory, instrumental, pathological and other studies in order to recognize a condition or establish the presence or absence of a disease.
  • SPC-11 - readiness to render emergency medical care in conditions requiring urgent medical intervention.
 
Types of educational work: practical classes, testing
The study of the module ends with a pass-fail test.
