Biochemistry

ANNOTATION
of academic discipline Biochemistry,
in the structure of the Basic education program
31.05.01 « General medicine»

The process of study Biochemistry is directed to the  formation of the following competencies: General Cultural Competences (GCC) and General Professional Competences (GPC) in accordance with the state educational standard of higher professional education in this area:
«The ability to abstract thinking, analysis, synthesis » (GCC-1);
«Readiness to use fundamental physical, chemical, mathematical and other science concepts and
methods in solving professional problems » (GPC-7).
As a result of the development of the discipline the student should the basic concepts, laws and
principles of biochemical knowledge in their logical integrity and consistency; chemical processes occurring in a living organism at the molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ levels; the main metabolic pathways of the transformation of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, purine and pyrimidine bases; the role of cell membranes and their transport systems in metabolism; structure and functions of the most important chemical compounds (nucleic acids, proteins, water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, hormones, etc.); regulation of biochemical processes in normal and pathological conditions.
As a result of the development of the discipline Biochemistry the student should be able to use
basic methods of collecting and analyzing of information about the structure and transformation of major organic substances in the composition of cells and tissues, to summarize, to reveal the relationship between the structure of substances and their functioning in a living system, systematize, interpret and comment on the obtained information; to use of physical, chemical and biological equipment; to interpret the results of the most common methods of laboratory and functional diagnostics for the detection of pathological processes in organs and systems; to predict the direction and result of transformations of biologically important substances.
As a result of the development of the discipline Biochemistry the student should have skills in
obtaining, systematizing, using and updating biochemical knowledge from various sources; in using of medical and biological conceptual framework; work with scientific medical information; preliminary analysis of the results of clinical, laboratory and instrumental methods examination of patients.
The development of the discipline of Biochemistry is achieved through the use of the active and interactive methods and data shaping technology competences of students: lectures with multimedia technologies; laboratory work; analysis of situational tasks, simulation of normal and pathological processes; workshops; participation of students in scientific activities.
The discipline Biochemistry is associated with the following disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy, Physics, Mathematics, the Latin language.
Conceptual issues of discipline Biochemistry are necessary for the study of following disciplines: Normal physiology, Pathophysiology and clinical pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Physiology of functional systems, Microbiology and virology.

The total complexity of the discipline is 7 credits, 252 hours.
The discipline Biochemistry is studied during 2 semesters.
