| Title: | Commencement speech: structural and pragmatic characteristics |
| Author: | |
| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | The authors examine the discourse of commencement speech, analyze its structural and compositional features as well as its pragmatic characteristics. A commencement address may be considered to be a combination of three types of discourse: political, didactic and congratulatory. It is noted that commencement address can be regarded as means of affecting collective consciousness of the addressee. Discourse analysis supposes considering the addresser and the addressee of the speech, the communicative situation, the social context and the contents of the speech. The authors believe that the use of pragmatic means of manipulating collective consciousness plays an important role in the formation of the moral values of a nation. The individuals whose speeches have been analyzed can be referred to the following types determined by their psychological characteristics: rational, emotional, philosophical and artistic. Rational types of speakers use arguments to make the meaning clear. People belonging to emotional types make their speech more expressive, they mostly rely on their feelings. The discourse of a commencement address features not only individual characteristics of the speaker and the speaker's charisma, but also the speaker's belonging to a particular linguistic culture. The speech impact exerted on the listeners in the process of public speaking is associated with a certain transformation of the addressee's individual and collective consciousness. The peculiarities of speech influence are in the fact that certain information is encoded in the speaker's discourse which is decoded by the listener. This information affects a possible or an actual change of listener's activity. The authors conclude that pragmatic means play a primary role in the manipulation of collective consciousness and the promotion of moral values. |

| Title: | Communication Challenges in Modern Social Practices |
| Author: | Dubrovskaya Tatiana |
| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | Axiological challenges to the 21st century humankind are as serious as materialistic ones. Search for meaning, the ever-present focus of human praxis, has gained new urgency in the current age of diversity and rapid transformations in all social spheres. This chapter is an overview of research on meaning-loaded forms in social interaction and pedagogy presented in the current volume. In their contributions, authors explore the impact of the major features of post-modernity: intense interaction of semiotic systems, rapid emergence of new technologies and high diversification of cultural patterns, both in communication and education. Recent decades have seen a singularly close integration of verbal and visual semiotic systems, which has become essential for social meaning construction. Technological advances bring to the fore the role of digital competency in educational environments, generating intense discussions on the impact of video games, corpus technologies, online projects and other digital pedagogy techniques on skills development. Facilitating personal development in the diverse and unpredictable modern world is a major challenge for educationalists, who draw on recent advances in neuroscience, genre theory, psychology and psycholinguistics in an attempt to tackle the problem. The volume may provide a point of reference for further discussions of multimodality, digitalization and cognitivity as the phenomena pertaining to the present day communicative and educational contexts. |

| Title: | Construction of сategories ‘strength’ and ‘weakness’ in russian and polish foreign policy discourse |
| Author: | Dubrovskaya Tatiana |
| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | The study is part of the project aimed at revealing the mechanisms of discursive construction of international relations (IR). It examines the functions of the categories ‘strength’ and ‘weakness’ in discursive representations of states as political actors. The research draws on assumptions of social constructionism and CDA. The data include recent speeches by Russian and Polish Ministers of Foreign Affairs. The paper argues that the opposition ‘strength vs. weakness’ is essential in the construction of IR in discourse. We focus on how nation states and their qualities are represented in foreign policy discourse, and which of these qualities conceptualise the categories of strength and weakness. We demonstrate that the two categories constitute a relational pair; however, the category of strength is expressed more explicitly than that of ‘weakness’, and the axiological charge of ‘strength’ changes depending on the actor that it represents. An array of linguistic tools is employed in constructing the opposition, and, consequentially, the IR between the political actors. The paper suggests that social actors and their qualities can be viewed as social categories that are perpetually constructed and re-constructed in discourse. The research develops the theory of discourse and demonstrates how discourse analysis contributes to the study of social practices and helps interpret current social phenomena. |

| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | The article is devoted to the study of the category of intertextuality on the material of the English song of the XX-XXI centuries. The work examines various approaches to the interpretation of the concept of intertextuality in the works of domestic and foreign linguists, distinguishes two models of intertextuality - wide and narrow, as a result of which intertextuality is defined, on the one hand, as a universal property of the text in general, when any text is read as intertext, and, on the other hand, as a specific quality of certain texts. The article studies types of intertextual relations, gives the definition of the pretext. The authors focus on intertextual inclusions, the sources of which are religious pretexts. The texts of English songs are examined as receiving texts, and the texts of religious content are considered from the perspective of precedence. In the work, the problem of interpretation of intertextual inclusions is associated with the problem of reader’s perception. |

| Title: | Political Discourse as Sliding Mode Manifestations |
| Author: | |
| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | The article considers the problem of political discourse transformation as exemplified by European (British&Russian) political rhetoric of the 20th century. Considered is the complex nature of political discourse comprising both its variable and invariable aspects reflecting discursive constancy and change which are regarded as manifestations of the sliding mode usually applicable to exact sciences phenomena. The major factors of transformation depend on social change caused by dramatic events in history, namely political conflicts. The invariable part of political discourse is concentrated around the text structure with dicteme as the main information and structure unit of the text and discourse. The variable part is determined by factors of speech regulation including target content of the utterance, status of the speaker and the listener, pre-supposition and post-supposition. Genre and register specificity of political discourse as its constant characteristics reflect the change. | Title: | Regulating Social Behaviour by Multimodal Public Signs: Semiotic Pragmatics of Prohibition |
| Author: | Dubrovskaya Tatiana |
| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | Interaction in both institutional and everyday situations involves a range of resources. Apart from verbal means, social behaviour is regulated through various semiotic instruments that contribute to or specify verbally expressed meanings. While there is a vast body of scholarly studies focusing on multimodality in communication, the structure of multimodal texts needs refining. In this chapter, we draw upon public signs and notices to explore how different semiotic resources, such as words, fonts, frames, colours and images cooperate to produce the pragmatic effect of prohibition. We distinguish between the two groups of public signs with respect to the relation they bear to institutional discourse and the semiotic resources employed: public signs that retain the marks of official legal discourse and thus rely predominantly on verbal means; and naïve regulators, which are deprived of legal markers and reiterate legal norms through multimodal resources, offering a ready-made version of a social norm. Our findings imply that multimodal resources allow for a combination of legal and commonsensical meanings in everyday interactions. |

This final collective chapter emphasizes the coexisting conceptions of Europe that are present in the media discourse of commemoration. Furthermore, it underlines how the tension between the various national and European narratives regarding the Centenary of WWI is part of an ongoing Europeanization process. |

| Annotation: | The article examines the news items on the official websites of the Federal Agency for Nationality Affairs, the State Duma Committee on Nationality Affairs, and the Council for Interethnic Relations for their compliance with the Strategy for the state nationality policy of the Russian Federation for the period up to 2025. The research is mainly based on the method of comparing text documents in natural language processing. The primary parameter for the analysis of the text corpus is the wording of the Strategy. | Author: | Razuvaeva Tatiana |
| Type: | Article |
| Kind: | Electronic copy |
| Annotation: | This chapter by Ekaterina Aleshina and Tatiana Razuvaeva adopts Blokh’s concept of dicteme (M. Blokh 2000) to compare a Russian corpus with a German one. Both corpora include a narrative on the Franco-German project for the future of Europe, but the Russian corpus indicates a will to inform the Russian audience about WWI, called the “forgotten war” in Russia, while the German corpus points to the significant place of the Great War for the development of Europe. |
